JRES celebrated military families and “Purple Up” month by giving students the opportunity to see a military helicopter up close after it landed at the school. Fourth and fifth grade students were able to talk with the pilots and enjoyed seeing their principal, Michael Stutt, in the co-pilot seat. Military-connected students in other grades were also able to see the helicopter land and take off.

The Williamsburg-James City County School Board approved the appointment of Dr. Kimberly W. Hollemon as principal of Lafayette High School in its meeting held Tuesday, May 15. Dr. Hollemon has served the school as its interim principal since August 2017.

Throughout this time she has worked with staff and the community on various initiatives including the launch of the LINC5 innovation course. LINC5 provides students with challenging opportunities in the areas of student leadership and entrepreneurial thinking. It encourages students to take initiative, communicate ideas, work in teams and solve real-world problems. Also, under her leadership the school enrolled its first cohort in the Early College Program at Thomas Nelson Community College. The Early College Program is a partnership with TNCC where eligible high school seniors begin college coursework during the fall semester and transition to the TNCC campus in the spring. Ultimately they earn college credits while still in high school.

“While serving as interim principal, Dr. Hollemon worked diligently to foster an atmosphere where students can excel academically, athletically and socially. Now, as she takes the helm as principal of Lafayette High School, we have every confidence she will work collaboratively with staff, families and the community to ensure that students have even more opportunities designed to prepare them for college and work success,” said Superintendent Dr. Olwen Herron.

Prior to serving as interim principal, Dr. Hollemon served WJCC Public Schools for six years as the coordinator for English/Reading Language Arts 9-12 and summer school program coordinator. She began her career in public education in 1992 as an English teacher in Norfolk City Public Schools. Other career highlights include stints as an assistant principal in Chesterfield County Public Schools; principal in Cumberland County; school Improvement specialist and partnership for achieving successful schools coordinator with the Virginia Department of Education; and assistant principal in Virginia Beach City Public Schools.

“Continuing to strengthen and expand our academic program by offering more students the opportunity to take advantage of rigorous and innovative courses will be a major goal in the coming year.   I am fortunate to be supported in this goal by an excellent staff. I also look forward to increasing partnerships with our business community in areas such as job shadowing and internships. We all want students to be even better positioned for academic success and workforce readiness,” said Dr. Hollemon.

She holds three degrees from Virginia State University— a B.A. in English Education, a M.Ed. in Administration and Supervision, and a Doctorate in Educational Administration and Supervision. She is a published author of a book addressing the challenges of teacher retention in rural districts, contributes articles on transformative instructional practices to professional publications and is a frequent presenter at professional and education conferences.

She is married to Richard R. Hollemon and has a daughter who is graduating from the University of Virginia (class of 2018). Dr. Hollemon also has a beloved Yorkie named Princeton.

Jamestown High School Wins Statewide Envirothon, Moves on to National Competition

Photographed L to R: Beth Beran, Virginia Envirothon coordinator; Jamestown students Rachel Smith, Joanna Stathopoulos, Anna Song, Lisa Small, Audrey Root, Joseph Kang and Jessica Shi; and Lindsey Norfolk, Dominion Energy.

Following a first place victory at the Area III regional competition, seven students from Jamestown High School took top honors in the 2018 Dominion Envirothon State competition held on May 20-21 in Ferrum, Va.

Jamestown’s 2018 Envirothon team is composed of Joseph Kang, Audrey Root, Jessica Shi, Lisa Small, Rachel Smith, Anna Song, and Joanna Stathopoulos.  “Only highly self-motivated and academically capable teams can succeed at this level of this international competition,” said coach Charlie Dubay.

Envirothon competitions consist of five field test stations—soils, wildlife, aquatics, forestry, and a current environmental issue—that challenge teams to answer questions in both written and hands-on formats.  This team also had to demonstrate their skill in orally presenting and defending an original solution to an environmental problem while industry and natural resources professionals served as judges.  This year, the team tackled the issue of pastureland management and presented a plan for a farm in Franklin County, Va.

“Our team’s success is due in part to the many wonderful partners who provide a great deal of support to our students including technical training, advice, and funding,” said Jamestown High School Principal Cathy Worley. “And we couldn’t have done it without the enthusiasm and guidance of our Envirothon coaches, Charlie Dubay, Rebecca Elton, and Amanda Mullane.”

The team’s partners include organizations such as the Colonial Soil and Water Conservation District, Ford’s Colony’s Trails Club, and Dominion Energy, as well as individuals including local farmer Bruce Abbott, local park managers of Waller Mill Park and York River State Park, safety engineer Scott Thomas with the Department of Conservation and Recreation, Southwest Virginia extension agent Tom Stanley, as well as parents, faculty, and administrators, and former student team members.

The Jamestown team will travel to Pocatello, Idaho, on July 22-28, 2018, to represent Virginia as they compete against teams from across the United States, Canada, and China at the National Conservation Foundation’s Envirothon.
