Following a first place victory at the Area III regional competition, seven students from Jamestown High School took top honors in the 2018 Dominion Envirothon State competition held on May 20-21 in Ferrum, Va.
Jamestown’s 2018 Envirothon team is composed of Joseph Kang, Audrey Root, Jessica Shi, Lisa Small, Rachel Smith, Anna Song, and Joanna Stathopoulos. “Only highly self-motivated and academically capable teams can succeed at this level of this international competition,” said coach Charlie Dubay.
Envirothon competitions consist of five field test stations—soils, wildlife, aquatics, forestry, and a current environmental issue—that challenge teams to answer questions in both written and hands-on formats. This team also had to demonstrate their skill in orally presenting and defending an original solution to an environmental problem while industry and natural resources professionals served as judges. This year, the team tackled the issue of pastureland management and presented a plan for a farm in Franklin County, Va.
“Our team’s success is due in part to the many wonderful partners who provide a great deal of support to our students including technical training, advice, and funding,” said Jamestown High School Principal Cathy Worley. “And we couldn’t have done it without the enthusiasm and guidance of our Envirothon coaches, Charlie Dubay, Rebecca Elton, and Amanda Mullane.”
The team’s partners include organizations such as the Colonial Soil and Water Conservation District, Ford’s Colony’s Trails Club, and Dominion Energy, as well as individuals including local farmer Bruce Abbott, local park managers of Waller Mill Park and York River State Park, safety engineer Scott Thomas with the Department of Conservation and Recreation, Southwest Virginia extension agent Tom Stanley, as well as parents, faculty, and administrators, and former student team members.
The Jamestown team will travel to Pocatello, Idaho, on July 22-28, 2018, to represent Virginia as they compete against teams from across the United States, Canada, and China at the National Conservation Foundation’s Envirothon.
