Snow Forecast & Possible Early Release: March 21, 2018

As you may be aware, snow is once again in the forecast for our area. Division staff are closely monitoring weather reports from the National Weather Service and will continue to do so today and tomorrow.

At this time, school will be held as scheduled on Wednesday, March 21; however, we are monitoring the timing of the forecasted snow and ask that you be prepared in the event that we need to release students early on Wednesday.

Please make sure your child knows where to go and what to do in the event of an early release. Additionally, one way to prepare is to ensure that we have correct contact information for your family. If you have not received a weather-related phone call this school year, we do not have your correct contact information on file. If you have received our previous calls, and your phone number has not changed, you will receive a call if we adjust tomorrow’s school day.

If you are unable to give us corrected information today, you can still learn of any change to the school schedule by following us on Twitter (@WJCCSchools) or Facebook (WJCC Schools). We also will post information on our website (https://wjccschools.org) and notify local media if we dismiss early.

Thank you for your support and cooperation as we face yet another weather-related event. Happy Spring!

The PYP exhibition serves several key purposes as well as offers a collaborative and enriching opportunity for our students. A long term inquiry project engaged students in identifying, investigating, and offering solutions to real life issues or problems.  Through the inquiry projects, students demonstrated independence and responsibility for their own learning, and discovered how they can take action as a result of their learning. The exhibition is a culminating celebration of the transition from elementary learners to the middle school years.  This year’s central idea was “Math expands our understanding of the world.”

WJCC students have been taking advantage of spring mornings and afternoons to walk and bike to school. At Laurel Lane, Clara Byrd Baker and Norge, one is likely to see the family dog and little brothers or sisters in strollers and Mom and Dad on bikes as well.

Norge students are ready to try out what they learned in their Bike Safety SHIP club with BikeWalk Williamsburg volunteers and Ms. Miller, the SHIP club facilitator.

On a recent Walk to School Day, a Clara Byrd Baker family enjoys the beautiful spring morning and students collect Walk and Roll incentive prizes.

Bike Safety education is being taught at Norge Elementary School in collaboration with School Health Initiative Program (SHIP) and BikeWalk Williamsburg. Students are enjoying practicing what they learn. The club’s facilitator is Ms. Lynn Miller, Norge’s library assistant and a bicycle enthusiast.

Upcoming events include:

In April, Earth Day Walk and Roll Events will be held at SRTS target sites to celebrate those using self-powered transportation not only for the physical fitness benefits, but also to protect our environment. More information will be disseminated through individual schools’ communication networks.

Districtwide Bicycle Rodeo in collaboration with BikeWalk Williamsburg will be held on April 28 at the YMCA as part of Sentara’s Safe Kids Day event.

Latin 1 students at Hornsby helped bring the ancient world to life for the 3rd grade classes at JBB. The Latin students dressed as Greek and Roman gods or mythological beings and assisted the 3rd graders on an archeology dig in the HMS library. Then, the Latin students went to JBB to assist the 3rd graders with creating a multimedia presentation about the artifacts they found on the dig.

On April 10, the Young Audiences of Virginia, Inc came to Norge Elementary School to present “Tales of the Griot”. Students and staff participated in an interactive and educational program which taught the history of the Griot and cultural influences of Mali.

“Atumpan enchants students with the stories and the instruments of West Africa in this amazing performance of “Tales of the Griot.” After one of your students is crowned chief of the village, the fun really begins. Atumpan shares the importance of how the drum was a primary means of communication in African villages. Jamestown High School Principal Catherine Worley, Ph.D., has been named the Virginia Association of Secondary School Principals (VASSP) 2018 Outstanding High School Principal of Virginia.

“VASSP is honored to recognize the outstanding work of Catherine Worley,” said Dr. Randy Barrack, VASSP executive director. “Effective schools are vital to the success of students, and the high expectations demanded by principals and their belief in the capacity of all students to perform is critical in school leadership. The stories of such leadership that we capture in the annual award program continues to impress and inspire all of us.”

VASSP annually awards one middle level and one high school level winner in the Commonwealth. Principals are typically nominated by their peers or division superintendents. A VASSP Principals Awards Committee reviews the nominations, and principals selected for consideration of the award are interviewed by a panel of principals.

As a principal, Dr. Worley has proven success in involving the local community in the life of the school and has shown an astute awareness of current and emerging issues as well as a passion for improving the school’s learning environment. Worley will receive the state association’s award at the 91st Annual Virginia Middle and High School Principals Conference and Exposition to be held in Hot Springs, Virginia, June 24-27, 2018. She will be honored by VASSP and Herff Jones later this fall with the presentation of the state principal’s ring at a dinner ceremony in Richmond. As Virginia’s award recipient, Worley will have a platform to speak on behalf of her colleagues and to advocate for the needs of schools across Virginia and the nation.

“Dr. Worley is an outstanding principal and truly deserving of this honor and recognition,” Dr. Olwen Herron, Williamsburg-James City County Public Schools superintendent, said. “She is collaborative, innovative, an instructional expert and a true servant leader. Dr. Worley will be an incredible leadership role model for the Commonwealth of Virginia!”

“I am truly humbled by this recognition,” said Dr. Catherine Worley. “The success of Jamestown High School is a collaborative effort between outstanding teachers, staff, students and our community. I am appreciative of the support of my superintendent, Dr. Olwen Herron, WJCC Schools, and the VASSP. Together, we will continue to open doors, break down barriers, promote equity, and champion success for every student.”
