2015-16 Elementary School Schedules

$

Last year’s inclement weather (8 missed days and 3 delay or early release days) required the division to make a mid-school-year modification to the elementary schedule to meet the state’s minimum instructional-hour requirement. This is the second school year in a row that mid-year modifications to the school schedule/calendar were required due to inclement weather.

To avoid mid-year adjustments and to bank instructional time, the 11 minutes (5 in the morning and 6 in the afternoon) added in March 2015 will be maintained for the 2015-16 school year. The 2015-16 elementary school schedules will be:

Tier 2:

8:30 a.m. to 3:16 p.m. (Early Release: 8:30 a.m. to 12:46 p.m.)

DJ Montague, James River & Stonehouse

Tier 3:

9:15 a.m. to 4:01 p.m. (Early Release: 9:15 a.m. to 1:31 p.m.)

Clara Byrd Baker, J. Blaine Blayton, Matoaka, Matthew Whaley, Rawls Byrd & Norge

Middle and high school schedules will remain unchanged. The 2015-16 school-year calendar is available here.

WJCC Awarded $50,000 High School Innovation Grant

WJCC Public Schools has been awarded a $50,000 high school innovation planning grant from the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE).

Announced today by Governor Terry McAuliffe, WJCC will receive one of the five $50,000 grants to plan a “bold, innovative program aimed at building the workforce of the 21st century,” Governor McAuliffe said. The proposed program will be implemented initially at Warhill High School with plans to expand into the division’s other two high schools – Jamestown and Lafayette.

In partnership with the College of William & Mary School of Education, WJCC will plan “MySchool@WHS” — a redesign of high school that will center on student choice and will offer the opportunity for 24/7 learning. The goal of MySchool@WHS is to create an innovative high school experience where students are engaged in the design of their own learning.

The proposal sets an implementation goal of September 2016 for entering ninth grade students at WHS. W&M School of Education and W&M Mason School of Business faculty will design and lead the Design Your Life experience for rising 9th graders at the school.

The grants, which were established by the 2015 General Assembly and signed by Governor McAuliffe as part of the budget, will allow local school divisions receiving the funds to enact their own specifically-designed program, free from the usual regulations imposed on school divisions.

“Governor Terry McAuliffe and the General Assembly challenged school divisions to think outside the box and develop nontraditional approaches to instruction, measurement of content mastery and school governance,” Superintendent of Public Instruction Steven R. Staples said. “These planning grants will allow the five most promising proposals to move from vision to reality.”

Grants were also awarded to Fairfax County, Newport News, Salem and a Chesterfield-led consortium of 10 Richmond-area school divisions.

Lafayette High School won the AAA Virginia High School League’s Wells Fargo Cup for Athletics for the 2014-2015 school year. Winning the Wells Fargo Cup signifies Lafayette as the number one AAA high school in the state in athletics. This year Lafayette’s athletic teams accumulated 527.5 points, which is the second most point total in VHSL history. The VHSL rewards team points towards the Wells Fargo Cup for placement in the state playoffs. The team state champion, for example, receives 50 points, the state runner-up receives 45 point down to the 8th place team which receives 15 points.
This year, Lafayette had 15 of its 22 varsity sports team finish the year in the final 8 in the state. By winning the Wells Fargo Cup for Athletics this year and winning the Wells Fargo Cup for Academic-Activities last year, Lafayette became one of only four high schools in the history of the VHSL to win the Wells Fargo Cup in both Athletics and Academic-Activities. The other three high schools are Blacksburg, Radford and Woodbridge.
Also, this year the Lafayette Rams won the VHSL’s most prestigious award, the Sportsmanship-Integrity-Ethics Award. This was the third straight and the fifth time in the last 13 years that Lafayette has won this Sportsmanship-Integrity-Ethics Award.

  • Lafayette: We sent off the PO on the new bathroom in LHS 900 bldg and alerted the company. Gerry purchased the materials to install the new classroom door, which will be installed this month. Starting to look at ways to adapt boys’ locker room area.
  • FCI: FG addresses a huge number of issues, all of which deserve attention over the next 10 years. Next step is to start placing these items into the CIP/Maintenance timeline.
  • Jamestown: Progress Meeting Wednesday am. Project is on schedule. The contractor has completed all Phase 2 moisture mitigation, and begun wall painting. Much of the 2nd floor has be painted and new rubberized tile installed in five classrooms. The LED parking lot lights will be installed beginning early August; same time work starts in the media center. Next progress meeting is July 30. We will conduct our first walk thru/inspection after the meeting. Contractor estimates that one wing of the second floor will be completed by that point.
  • DJM: Having issues with the DJ Montague bus canopy. Apparently, JCSA does not have an exact location on their water line running by the sidewalk. We need to know this to avoid placing a post there. Looks like we may have to drill some test holes to note the line’s location.

Author and Illustrator Peter Brown came to Norge on October 13 to talk to grades 1-3. They heard about his childhood and how he became an author and illustrator of children’s books. They also listened to him read one of his books, My Teacher is a Monster! (No, I am Not.) as well as watched him draw one of his illustrations.

Peter Brown is pictured here reading a “thank you booklet” that Mrs. Parsons’ second graders made for him. They drew their own versions of Creepy Carrots (from his book Creepy Carrots) and thanked him for coming to Norge.
