During its April 9 meeting, the WJCC School Board approved the appointment of Mrs. Crystal Haskins as the principal of James Blair Middle School beginning with the start of the 2019-20 school year.
Haskins began her career in 2004 as a classroom teacher before moving into numerous administrative roles. She is currently the principal of Dozier Middle School in Newport News where she led the school in earning SOL accreditation.
“Mrs. Haskins is not afraid to roll up her sleeves and do the hard work to support students on their journey to success,” said Dr. Olwen E. Herron, Superintendent of WJCC Schools. “Our community had the opportunity to see that first hand during Ms. Haskins’ time as a teacher and administrator in our own schools.”
Haskins previously worked for WJCC Schools as a seventh-grade teacher, minority achievement coach and student advancement coach at Toano Middle School. Additionally, she served as an assistant principal at Jamestown High School. Haskins career also included time as a teacher in Brunswick County Public Schools and an assistant principal intern with York County Schools.
“I am passionate about establishing and sustaining a positive school culture. That is essential to move a school forward academically and for students to thrive emotionally,” said Haskins. “I am committed to positive relationships, quality instruction and student engagement. Let’s reflect on where we are as a school community, build strong relationships among students, staff and stakeholders, and engage our students to overcome challenges and carry out our plan for success through quality instruction.”
Haskins holds a Bachelor of Arts from Christopher Newport University, a master’s from Regent University and an Educational Specialist Degree in Educational Leadership and Policy from George Washington University. She is currently pursuing her doctorate from Old Dominion University.
Haskins will officially join the James Blair Middle School family July 1. Until then, WJCC Schools Chief of Staff Dr. Corey Murphy will continue to serve as acting principal of the school.
