The Virginia Department of Education and the Virginia Council on the Interstate Compact for Military Children recently awarded J. Blaine Blayton Elementary School (JBBES) with a Purple Star designation for its commitment to meeting the needs of children from military families.
JBBES is one of the first schools in Virginia to earn the honor. To qualify, schools must have a trained staff member serving as the primary contact for military families and as a liaison to the local military community. Purple Star schools must also provide resources, programs/activities and support on issues important to military-connected children such as deployments, transitions and academic planning.
JBBES will receive a Resolution of Recognition and a commemorative coin from the Virginia Council on the Interstate Compact on the Educational Opportunity of Military Children later this month. In addition, the school’s work to support military families will be featured at the Nov. 27 WJCC School Board meeting.
